This is a great article Gary. Thanks.

Lots of very helpful advice. Many pastors, afraid of the appearance of evil, avoid financial giving information like the plague. Many are also afraid to even address the giving from the front at all to not appear to be financially motivated.

Unfortunately, we miss ministry opportunities in the process. Changes in giving patterns can reveal a lot about a person's spiritual state and their contentment within our church as well. A newcomer may start giving before they even fill out the welcome card. We could miss that if we are out of touch. Also an unusually large one-time gift could point to a significant event in someone's life--a relative's passing, or a windfall profit.

I believe it was Nelson Searcy who mentioned that people will often stop giving to your church before they stop attending. He also mentioned that when he sends $10 to some ministry, he gets a thank you letter expressing gratitude and communicating the mission of the organization. When he gives to a church, he may get a quarterly or annual statement.

In addition to the great points in your article, our debt culture (including student loan debt) keeps many people from the mission field.

Thanks again for your article.
